Spring Skincare Tips: What Should You Change?
Spring Skincare Tips – As the weather warms up and humidity rises, your skin’s needs shift too. After months of winter that left your skin dull and dehydrated, it’s now time to transition into warmer months ahead. Get your sunscreen ready because it’s the best time to prepare for sunnier, more active days ahead. Give your heavy creams a rest, and follow these tips to keep your skin healthy, balanced, and glowing all throughout the season.
Switch To A More Lightweight Moisturizer
Yes, you can definitely benefit from changing your moisturizer in the spring. During winter months, your skin may feel drier than usual. The combination of the dry air outside, and the heating indoors can leave your skin dehydrated.
To avoid dehydrated skin, moisturizer is really important, which is why during winter months, it’s recommended to use heavier, thicker moisturizer like creams or ointments. However, as the weather becomes warmer, these types of moisturizers may feel too heavy on your skin.
For dry skin, lotions are hydrating and moisturizing enough without feeling too heavy on the skin. For oily skin, don’t skip moisturizer even when you feel you don’t need it. Dehydrated skin will actually produce more oil, so never skip moisturizer. Instead, choose a lightweight moisturizer such as a gel moisturizer.
Don’t Forget Exfoliation
Winter can oftentimes cause a buildup of dead skin cells, making your skin look dull, tired, and uneven. Spring is the perfect time to gently bring back exfoliation into your routine.
The key to exfoliating is to avoid harsh physical scrubs and opt for chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs instead. Also remember to not overdo it, because it can totally lead to irritation. But, if you have sensitive skin, AHAs/BHAs may be too harsh for your skin. Ingredients like PHAs or lactic acid can be the better option because they are milder, so they’re less likely to cause a reaction.
Always Use Sunscreen
As the days get warmer, it’s absolutely essential to wear sunscreen. Warmer days mean more time spent outdoors, and sun protection can’t be forgotten. For daily use, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin before going outside. If you’re planning to stay outdoors for a long time, go swimming or exercising, then SPF 50 is recommended.
Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen after 2 hours if you’re spending a long time outdoors, and after swimming or sweating.
What About Seasonal Allergies?
Seasonal allergies, or “Hay Fever” can cause more than just sneezing, itching, and blocked noses. Pollen and other environmental allergens can worsen eczema and cause flare-ups especially for those with sensitive skin.
Make sure you wash your face and body regularly after spending time outdoors to remove pollen and other allergens. Use gentle, fragrance-free products to avoid irritation and allergic reactions. Also remember to moisturize daily. This will help keep your skin barrier strong, leading to less flare-ups.
Spring is a season of renewal, and your skincare should reflect that. Swap out heavy textures for lighter ones, protect your skin from increased sun exposure, and stay mindful of allergens and oil buildup. With a few thoughtful tweaks, your skin can bloom just as beautifully as the season.
